Pure PocketDAB 1500 rechargeable DAB digital radio handheld with FM

Pure PocketDAB 1500 review

The PocketDAB 1500 feels solid and sturdy - its casing more than match for a few knocks and scrapes. The stylish backlit orange display shows station information and scrolling text, while the ubiquitous rocker switch found on many handhelds chooses and selects stations and makes changes to the radio's setup. The rocker also allows you to scroll quickly through DAB text information - handy if you don't want to wait for the next part of the message.

Around the back, the battery cover slides off to reveal a rechargeable battery, which can be easily removed if replacement is required. The Pure PocketDAB promises around 24 hours from a single charge, which means you can be listening on your journey into and out of work. Sadly, it's not possible to fit standard batteries in case the power does run out, but the life of the internal battery is high enough for this not to present problems.

The PocketDAB 1500's power and lock buttons are found along the top of the radio - the latter a necessity to stop accidental button presses when the unit is carried in a pocket.

Fancy an extra boost of low-down oomph? The PocketDAB 1500 features a bass boost feature, to really give the sonics presence, and a further series of 4 equaliser settings (live, vocal, jazz, acoustic) - as well as a flat/bypass setting. The bass enhancement works well with the supplied Sennheiser MX300 in-ear 'phones, giving music much more excitement and warmth.

Plugging in my own Sennheiser PMX100 headphones (handy when visiting these sort of shows where you might be fighting against the sound from powerful A/V equipment) doubled the wow factor - the sound was simply astounding. The Arrow rock station sounded powerful and warm with the equaliser set to normal and bass feature off. Power up the bass and the low down sonics on tap could easily reach ear-bleeding proportions! Talk stations' presenter voices were clear, defined and lacking in sibilance; BBC Radio Bristol and Radio 2 showed off the 1500's abilities to deliver speech without tinniness.
Pure PocketDAB 1500 fascia The Pure PocketDAB 1500 receives a glowing report. Sound is focussed - unlike this photo - with plentiful bass

Signal dropout was, happily, nonexistent with the unit on a stand and, without the hiss associated with FM stations, the DAB receiver offered an addictive listening experience. I wasn't able to take the radio out and about, but I do own a handheld not dissimilar to this and generally speaking find few problems with spluttering and burbling sound in good signal areas.

The radio could also be hooked up to a hi-fi or portable system with an AUX input, via the PocketDAB 1500's headphone output.

Pure have managed to shave several grams off the PocketDAB's brother, the PocketDAB 2000, which means at 65 x 110 x 21 mm and 123 grams it is significantly lighter and eminently pocketable. This PocketDAB's predecessor, the discontinued Pure PocketDAB 1000 looks less of a bargain, even if you could find it cheap somewhere.

Overall, the Pure PocketDAB 1500 turns in a stunning performance and offers a great way to tune into DAB radio stations on the move, while retaining an FM receiver for parts of your journey where the DAB signal may not be available. Its stylish finish and sturdy yet lightweight build quality indicates a product built to last the rigours of "life in the coat pocket".
