Four new transmitters for local digital radio in Salop and Wolves powered up - here's where

A series of new transmitters carrying BBC Radio Shopshire and Radio WM, Free Radio (Wolves), Free Radio 80s, Radio XL, Capital FM, Heart (West Midlands) and Smooth Radio has been switched on.

A celebration took place on Wednesday, 3rd May 2017 to highlight the new transmitters, at Bridgnorth, Oswestry, Church Stretton and Sedgley and to look forward to another transmitter for the above stations planned for Market Drayton over the next couple of weeks. The transmitters will carry local digital services for Wolverhampton, Shrewsbury & Telford.

The completion of five transmitters means that local DAB for Wolverhampton, Shrewsbury & Telford will be served by seven transmitters in the area. In all, 650,000 more listeners able to tune in to local digital radio, with coverage seeing a huge increase from 53 percent to 92 percent of the county's population.

Up until late 2015, transmitters at The Wrekin and Turners Hill covered 53 percent of the county's population. These two transmitters were switched on in 2001.

Last year more than 230 new transmitters carrying DAB digital radio stations were switched on.

To receive DAB digital radio services, you need a newer type of radio which can pick up both DAB and DAB+ digital broadcasts over the airwaves through its built-in aerial, to make sure you've a future-proofed way of listening to DAB digital radio.
