Make a programme, then get yourself heard on the radio for twenty quid

Citizen journalism has finally reached DAB digital radio, thanks to a new idea from Upload Radio - a station that allows anybody to send it an hour-long radio show for broadcast across Surrey, South and West London; Wrexham, Chester and Liverpool; and Gloucestershire.

The station, which acts as a blank audio canvas for budding and established presenters, is encouraging individuals, community groups, established podcasters, and existing radio stations who want to reach more people to submit programmes and shows via its website at uploadradio.com.

Although there are rules to follow based on a strict broadcasting code, the station's owners aim to put shows on the air if you stump up the tiny £20 fee for a 1-hour slot on the station, and can supply it with a high-quality audio file. The show can contain music or chat, advertising and even promotion for other stations and digital platforms. You pick one broadcast area for your show on Upload Radio from Surrey, South and West London; Wrexham, Chester and Liverpool; or Gloucestershire.

If accepted, your show will also appear as a 30-day catchup programme on the UK's RadioPlayer service.

To receive DAB digital radio services, you need a newer type of radio which can pick up both DAB and DAB+ digital broadcasts over the airwaves through its built-in aerial, to make sure you've a future-proofed way of listening to DAB digital radio. We've links to good models on our pages, or scroll down the page for some quick links to both DAB and DAB+, and internet radio receivers (the latter are useful if you want to listen to Planet Rock and Absolute 80s over the web, for example, with a good internet connection).
