Pure Evoke H series range of DAB digital radios are great timing for Christmas 2016 - with kitchen, sleep, wake-up and snooze timers

The Pure Evoke H2 builds on the success of the multi award-winning Evoke D2, with DAB, DAB+ and FM tuners for futureproofing, with a kitchen timer, sleep timer, single alarm (wake to radio or tone) and snooze timers.

The H range all come with a 3 year warranty, meaning if the radio should develop a fault during the warranty period, it will either be replaced (in the first six months) or repaired or replaced with the exact same model, if still available, or one of equal or higher value and functionality.

The Evoke H range is a step-down from the more expensive Evoke C-F6, Evoke C-D6 and Evoke C-D4 range, dispensing with the CD players or internet radio capabilities of that range.

It's the Evoke H3 that generates the most interest, with its 2.4 inch TFT colour display, Bluetooth audio (so you can pair and play music held on your smartphone to the H3), AUX in socket (if you want to make a cable connection to an MP3 player, letting you hear tracks through the H3's powered speaker - a 3 inch diameter full-range driver with a maximum output of 3 Watts). The H3 is a neat and compact 186mm x 115mm x 110mm, with a ported enclosure for improvements in bass response, and the radio displays DAB slideshow artwork (from a few select stations such as Heart and Capital) in London on that bright screen. Like the H2, there's an alarm, with adjustable sleep, snooze and kitchen timers - and a stereo headphone socket.

The Evoke H3 has 4 direct-access preset memories for stations, with further presses of the fourth button bringing up more of your stored stations. Add the optional battery pack and the H3 is good to go for up to 30 hours between charges. Mouting the buttons on top leaves the front fascia clean and uncluttered, with just an on-off button and that nice, clear display on view.

The Evoke H4 takes things up a notch: a meatier amplifier ups the power output to 10 Watts, and offers six dedicated numbered buttons for accessing your stored stations. A larger, crisp 2.8 inch TFT screen shows DAB slideshow information from a small but growing number of digital radio stations that are using this technology. Pure's touch-sensitive carry handle atop the radio lets you silence the alarm for forty winks. As with the H2 and H3, there is a single alarm, with sleep and kitchen timers for when recipes demand accurate timings, with an optional rechargeable battery for up to 50 hours' use from one charge.

Finally, the Evoke H6 plays the BBC's national Radios 1 to 3, 6 music and FM radio stations in stereo, with its twin speakers and 2 x 10 Watts RMS power output. Six buttons make accessing stored stations easier, while Bluetooth audio allows you to play your own tracks stored on your smartphone through the Evoke H6's digital amplifier, using its full-range 3 inch speakers and ported enclosure for maximum effect. As with the H4, there's a snoozehandle to quieten the alarm (tone or radio) for a few moments, plus all-important snooze, sleep and kitchen timers.

Again, add a rechargeable battery pack and you can take the Evoke H6 out and about for up to 50 hours at a time.

What's the difference between the Evoke H2, H3, H4 and H6 models?

The H3, H4 and H6 all have a colour display, which makes the radio nice and easy to use. Those (admittedly few) stations such as Heart and Capital in London make use of the DAB slideshow feature to give artist and programme information, for example. DAB information text makes use of the screen realestate, too. The H4 and H6 models have a slightly bigger screen than the H3. It's a shame that the DAB slideshow capabilities, as also demonstrated on the £50Pure Elan E3, are not more widely broadcast on digital radio bundles in the UK, but it's something we may see in more widespread use in a few years' time.

An important point is that you can manually adjust the brightness of each model's display, so if it's too bright for you, this can be tailored to suit. Alternatively, you can set the display to automatically dim, depending on the light level in the room (in the bedroom, for instance).

The H4 produces a bigger sound thanks to an uplift from 3 Watts of the Evoke H3 to the 10 Watts of the Evoke H4 - enough to fill a small to medium size room with sound. The Evoke H6 takes this one step further and adds another speaker for stereo sound, giving 2 x 10 Watts RMS. All radios in the Evoke H range have a stereo headphone socket for quiet listening without disturbing others.

The H3, H4 and H6 all feature Bluetooth audio, but the H2 with its standard matrix display, does not. This means you'll need to connect your smartphone or MP3 player via a standard 3.5mm audio cable to the radio's AUX IN socket. The H3, H4 and H6 also feature an AUX IN socket, if you don't want the faff of pairing a new device when your friends come 'round to play their music through the radio.
