LG Stylus 2 DAB+ brings digi radio to your smartphone
Thursday, 28th April 2016

The brand new LG Stylus 2 combining FM and DAB+ tuners - and internet radio - in a smartphone device, is available now from 02 Mobile on pay monthly or pay-as-you-go tariffs.

With a large crisp 5.7 inch screen, the 1280 x 720 IPS LCD pixel rezzed-up Stylus 2 runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow, has 1.5GB of RAM, has two cameras (13.0megapixel autofocus main camera, with an 8.0mp front camera for selfies and Skype), 1.2GHz quad-core processor 16GB of internal storage and a microSD slot offering a further 64GB of storage capacity on a separate card; plenty of storage possibilities here! Its video capabilities capture 2k movies@30fps.

The Stylus 2 is the world's first DAB+ enabled phone, meaning it can also pick up digital radio stations Magic Chilled, Fun Kids children's radio and Jazz FM in stereo on the UK's second commercial radio DAB bundle, and all of the stations broadcasting nationally on the BBC and Digital One multiplexes in mono and stereo, including local digital stations. It'll also receive national and local FM radio stations. These can be fed to your bluetooth-enabled car stereo or you can listen via headphones, Bluetooth speaker or a wired speaker with built-in amplification. The cable acts as the aerial for digital and analogue radio broadcasts.

The 145g Stylus 2's removable battery is good for up to 29 hours' use on the 'phone, with up to 670 hours of standby time if you keep your mitts completely off the tech. Its dimensions are 155 x 79.6 x 7.4mm.

The LG features a specially-written RadioPlayer app, which can switch between DAB stations and their streaming versions over wi-fi or 4G. If the DAB/DAB+ signal should drop out, the app can begin streaming using mobile phone coverage. It will intelligently switch back to DAB when signal conditions improve on digital radio.

The 'phone also has an FM tuner built-in, with Bluetooth 4.1LE for handsfree calling and connection to your car stereo's Bluetooth-enabled radio, for a bigger sound through your car's speakers. The 'phone's 3000mAh (typical) removable Li-Ion battery can be swapped out for a spare, if you need to. There's a small display showing quick notifications when the Quick Cover case is on.

As the name suggests, the '2 is supplied with a stylus enabling you to edit picture notes, transform your scrawl into beautiful script and prod away at DAB stations 'til you find your favourite. If you wander off with your 'phone leaving the stylus too far behind, the Stylus 2 will alert you with a message.

The LG Stylus 2 LGK520 with digital (DAB/DAB+) and analogue (FM) radio tuner built-in is available on the 02 network from O2 Mobile in the UK now. You can check the left-hand column for where to buy one.

To receive DAB digital radio services, you need a type of smartphone or radio designed to pick up digital broadcasts over the airwaves through its built-in aerial. We've links to good models on our pages, or scroll down the page for some quick links to both DAB and wi-fi receivers for your home.
