Test transmissions spring up for new DAB stations

A new bundle of radio stations on DAB digital radio is broadcasting test transmissions ahead of official launch. The new bundle is available on block/channel 11A nationally across many densely populated parts of the UK, such as Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, London and Bristol - and other areas including South Wales, parts of North Devon, Herefordshire, Central Scotland and parts of North Wales.

We have more details of the new stations, including a return for national phone-in station talkRadio, pop and rock album station Virgin Radio and a nationally-broadcast Jazz FM.

The test transmissions are taking place now and you can find out if you can receive the new bundle of stations, carried on a multiplex, by retuning your DAB radio between now and 29th February, when the first stations officially launch. Until then, the test transmissions will give you a flavour of what you can expect.

We've a list of all 45 transmitter locations for the bundle of stations, offering 73 percent coverage for adults in the UK on DAB digital radio.

The audio test transmissions may stop suddenly or be interrupted between now and when the stations officially launch. This is because adjustments may be made to the audio or transmitters during this period of testing, so expect them to stop and start intermittently.

All stations on the multiplex are testing now, including Virgin Radio, talkRADIO and talkSPORT 2.

Fun Kids, Jazz FM Stereo and Magic Chilled are all using the more efficient DAB+ standard to broadcast, which has allowed them to launch in stereo and be heard on DAB+ enabled receivers. Many DAB radios manufactured in the last five years can receive DAB+. Later models show either a digital tick on the box, or a DAB+ logo alongside a regular DAB logo.

Tests of talkRADIO, talkSPORT 2 and Virgin Radio are also taking place now, before their official launch.

To receive DAB and DAB+ digital radio services, you need a type of radio designed to pick up digital broadcasts over the airwaves through its built-in aerial. We've links to good models on our pages, or scroll down the page for some quick links to both DAB and wi-fi receivers featuring DAB+.
