Heart, Smooth and BBC Radio Suffolk part of Autumn 2016 DAB launch

STOP PRESS Suffolk services launch on local digital radio 30th Sept 2016.

Following deliberations that have lasted just a few months, the radio regulator has announced the award of a local DAB digital radio bundle for Suffolk.

Suffolk First will provide news, sport, entertainment and celebrity news during weekday mornings, with a musical focus on country music tracks, will launch alongside established stations Heart, Smooth and the BBC local station in the county of Suffolk.

Newcomer Anglia will play nonstop rock and pop music for the area.

The winner of the multiplex license, Muxco, plans to begin transmitting local services on DAB in the county in October 2016 and is inviting other stations onto the multiplex.

Contemporary hit music station Heart (currently on FM only), laid-back melodic hits station Smooth Radio (broadcast on mediumwave only at present) and the BBC's own local BBC Radio Suffolk (on MW and FM across the county) will also be heard across large parts of the county, thanks to a small network of transmitters at Mendlesham (covering most of central Suffolk), Puttocks Hill (Bury St Edmunds and surrounds) and Warren Heath (Ipswich and locales), covering 87 per cent of the county's roads and 56 per cent of adult listeners using a DAB set indoors. You can view a map of the predicted coverage area here.

Services could be on-air by October 2016, following a period of DAB tests as early as September 2016, once the transmitter network is fully up and running.

The adjacent county of Essex saw their local DAB multiplex launch back in Summer 2002, whilst Spring 2003 welcomed Norfolk's DAB radio stations. The multiplex was advertised earlier this year, with Muxco the sole applicant for the license.

To receive DAB digital radio services, you need a type of radio designed to pick up digital broadcasts over the airwaves through its built-in aerial. We've links to good models on our pages, or scroll down the page for some quick links to both DAB and wi-fi receivers.
