Yorkshire regional multiplex closing - but where will all the stations go?

The last remaining regional digital radio multiplex in England - MXR Yorkshire - will be closing at the end of the month, meaning fans of Xfm and listeners to UCB Gospel or UCB Inspirational will have to switch to the internet to hear these stations.

What happens to Heart, Smooth, Radio Yorkshire and Capital? Well, they just move to a different bundle on DAB.

Relaxing music station Smooth has bagged a place on the local digital radio multiplexes serving Leeds, South Yorkshire and North Yorkshire. Sister station Capital will continue to be heard in the Yorkshire area on DAB in Leeds, South Yorkshire, Bradford & Huddersfield and North Yorkshire local digital radio multiplexes. The chart hits station will also be heard across Humberside.

Heart hops onto the Leeds, South Yorkshire and Bradford & Huddersfield local digital radio multiplexes, while oldies station Gold opens up on the local DAB bundle serving Humberside. See our station listings here.

Sports talk station Radio Yorkshire can still be heard from the end of June 2015 - you'll just have to scan for it on the Bradford & Huddersfield or North Yorkshire local digital radio bundles.

How do I know which multplexes I can receive?

If you can see Radio Aire on your DAB station list, you're picking up the Leeds multiplex and will be able to listen to all stations carried as a bundle on the multiplex.
If you can see BBC Radio York on your DAB station list, you're receiving the North Yorkshire multiplex.
If you can see BBC Radio Humberside on your DAB station list, you're able to pick up the Humberside multiplex.
If you can see Pulse 2 on your DAB station list, you're receiving the Bradford & Huddersfield multiplex.
If you can see BBC Radio Sheffield on your DAB station list, you're getting the South Yorkshire multiplex.

You may be able to pick up one or more of the above multiplexes, carrying a bundle of DAB radio stations, depending on where you live in Yorkshire.

Listeners in the Yorkshire region may need to retune their DAB radios and can also find out how to get rid of stations showing a "?" in the list.

The Yorkshire regional DAB multiplex closes on 29th June 2015, with the Belmont transmitter likely to be re-used for Lincolnshire DAB, due to launch in September 2015. The license was awarded to MXR in 2002 and launched in 2003 with these stations:

  • Urban Choice : urban sounds (Soul Media Ltd)

  • Capital Disney : top 40 pop music for teens, plus Disney programmes (Walt Disney/Capital Radio plc)

  • Heart : adult MOR (Chrysalis Radio Ltd)

  • Jazz FM : classic and new jazz & soul music (Jazz FM plc)

  • The Arrow : classic and current rock music (Chrysalis Radio Ltd)

  • Smooth : easy listening music (GMG plc)

  • DNN : national and local news (DNN Ltd)

  • Galaxy : contemporary dance and r&b music (Chrysalis Radio Ltd)

  • Real Radio : adult contemporary music and talk (GMG plc)

To receive DAB digital radio services, you need a type of radio designed to pick up digital broadcasts over the airwaves through its built-in aerial. We've links to good models on our pages, or scroll down the page for some quick links to both DAB and wi-fi receivers.
