Suffolk catering for DAB listeners as multiplex license advertised

BBC Radio Suffolk will join a selection of stations on local DAB digital radio, as the county's multiplex is finally put up for grabs.

STOP PRESS Suffolk stations launch on local digital radio 30th Sept 2016.

The county already has a number of stations broadcasting on FM and MW (mediumwave), but Suffolk is one of the last parts of England to see the launch of a dedicated bundle of DAB stations for the local area.

Allocated block 10C, whichever company or consortium decides to apply for the license to operate the multiplex will need to make sure their transmitter locations and signal power do not interfere with Belgium or French digital TV signals. Likewise, incoming signals from the continent might provide some issues for listeners in Suffolk, however the radio regulator, Ofcom, "do[es] not expect this to be a significant source of interference to the proposed Suffolk service."

As is usual with the advertisement of local DAB multiplexes, the local BBC station is guaranteed space alongside other stations, which in this case is BBC Radio Suffolk.

Potential applicants have until Thursday 11th June 2015 to submit their plans for the new license. It is likely the new multiplex will launch in the latter part of 2016, allowing time for DAB transmitters to be built and commissioned, and for stations to get themselves ready for the multiplex switch-on.

Local DAB operator Muxco are interested in hearing from potential Suffolk service providers who wish to propose a station for the area, whether commercial or community stations.

The adjacent county of Essex saw their local DAB multiplex launch back in Summer 2002, whilst Spring 2003 welcomed Norfolk's DAB radio stations.

To receive DAB digital radio services, you need a type of radio designed to pick up digital broadcasts over the airwaves through its built-in aerial.
