Gloucester and Cheltenham tune in to digital radio
Listeners in Gloucestershire will need to re-tune their digital radio to pick up the new services

Radio in Gloucestershire just got a little more exciting following the launch on Friday, 18th October 2013 of the new local DAB digital radio multiplex for the county.

The area's news, sport and information station BBC Radio Gloucestershire, classic hits brand Gold and contemporary pop music station Heart has been joined by Hereford and Monmouthshire's popular local Sunshine Radio, broadcasting on DAB for the very first time.

Architecturally-inspiring Pittville Pump Rooms in Cheltenham was the location for the power-up of transmitters in Churchdown Hill and Stockend Wood, giving a potential 400,000 listeners the chance to tune in to their local services on DAB. Gloucester, Cheltenham, Tewkesbury, Stroud and the River Severn and M5 motorway are covered by the new transmitters.

Since the switch on, 450 kilometres of roads are covered by the four stations on digital radio, with two further transmitters based at Cirencester and Icombe Hill, serving the Cotswolds, are planned for launch before the end of the year, extending coverage for listeners - both indoors and in their cars - further afield.

Jane Ostler, Director of Digital Radio UK, said: "This is great news for over 400,000 people in Gloucestershire as until now they have not been able to receive their favourite local stations on DAB. Boosting coverage for this area means listeners can tune into their favourite local stations as well as national BBC and commercial ones."

If you already own a DAB radio, you can get re-tuning advice to pick up the new broadcasts.

To receive the above DAB digital radio stations in Gloucestershire, you need a type of radio designed to pick up digital broadcasts over the airwaves through its built-in aerial. We've links to reliable models on our pages, or scroll down the page for some quick links to both DAB and wi-fi sets.
