Cardiff and Newport digi radio services could extend into parts of South Wales Valleys

Listeners in Aberdare, Abergavenny and Ebbw Vale will be able to pick up South Wales' Capital FM, hip-hop and r&b station Choice and classic hits station Gold, thanks to a plan by DAB operator NOW Digital to extend coverage of Cardiff and Newport radio services into the Heads of the South Wales Valleys on 30th July 2013.

BBC Cymru, BBC Radio Wales and Real Radio, Heart and rock station Nation Radio will be added to the same group of stations. A regional multiplex serving South Wales and the West is due to close at the end of July 2013, with only three services (Real, Heart and Nation) transferring to the enlarged group of stations. The remainder of the stations on the regional multiplex, including rock brands Real XS and Xfm, will no longer be receivable in South Wales.

The plans also involve swapping the current Wenallt transmitter for one at Wenvoe, and re-using a transmitter at Mendip, which will enable services on the multiplex to be heard across large parts of Bristol and Bath.

How will this affect me?
You'll need to re-tune your DAB radio on or after 30th July 2013 to be able to pick up these changes, as the bundle of stations will be moving from one channel to another - from 11C to 12C.

How can I continue to listen to Xfm, Real XS, Nation 80s, Mountain FM or UBC after 29th July 2013 in Cardiff, Swansea, South Wales and The West?
You'll need to tune in on 102.1 FM to listen to Nation 80s in and around Swansea Bay; while the others' live streams (including Mountain FM) can be found online. You may want to look at getting an internet radio if you want to listen on a full-size receiver instead of your computer.

How can I have my say on the proposals?
You have until 19th July 2013 to comment on the Cardiff and Newport proposals.

To receive DAB digital radio services, you need a type of radio designed to pick up digital broadcasts over the airwaves through its built-in aerial. We've links to good models on our pages, or scroll down the page for some quick links to both DAB and wi-fi sets.
