Local DAB comes to North Wales in early 2011

Read updated information on the local multiplex for North-East Wales, Liverpool and West Cheshire on this website, with a revised launch date of November 2012.

Plans for local DAB digital radio in North and North-East Wales are being finalised, which could see services launch in early 2011.

Local DAB multiplex operator MuxCo wants to combine the separate multiplexes for North Wales and North-East Wales and West Chester into a mega-multiplex covering a larger transmission area, extending into parts of Mid Wales.

By enlarging the coverage area, the company expects more local stations will want to broadcast on DAB, as it gives them the opportunity to attract more listeners in neighbouring areas.

MuxCo has been waiting for the Digital Economy Act to become law, giving them the opportunity to merge the transmission areas of their local multiplexes in the switch to digital.

MuxCo North Wales

  • BBC Radio Cymru : news, information and music

  • BBC Radio Wales : news, information and music

  • Dee 106.3 : pop and contemporary music

  • Nation Radio : new rock and alternative music, currently broadcasting to South Wales

  • Juice FM : contemporary rock and dance music

  • Real Radio : pop music, currently broadcasting to South Wales and due to begin broadcasting on FM in North Wales

  • Shuffle : chart, dance and rock tracks with listener-generated content

Other stations are due to be announced nearer launch.

MuxCo are proposing a revised launch of "early 2011" for its DAB multiplex, with transmitters at St Johns Beacon, Wrexham Rhos, Moel-y-Parc and Great Ormes Head. Arfon is due to follow at a later date, subject to frequency clearance with Ireland.

MuxCo won the licence to run the multiplex for North Wales in June 2008 and North-East Wales and West Chester in September 2007. Ofcom was recently granted powers to allow multiplex operators to combine their transmission areas in order for them to give stations the opportunity to broadcast to a greater number of listeners.
