Cambridge ad pulls in one applicant to run local DAB multiplex

Modern rock music station The Storm, continuous chart hit music channel Smash Hits and student station SBN are all planning to launch on a new local DAB digital radio multiplex to cover Cambridge next year.

The sole applicant for the licence, NOWdigital, has signed up Cambridge-based Q103 to be carried on the digital platform. The BBC's Radio Cambridgeshire is also to be heard on DAB digital radio in the area by default.

Although the licence has yet to be awarded, local digital multiplex operator NOWdigital, has a very high chance of running the multiplex, as it was the only applicant.

Dance music brand Vibe FM is also set to make an appearance on the multiplex, with student station SBN due to broadcast part-time in the evenings as part of an 'access' channel. It is hoped further stations will join the access channel in the future.

NOWdigital hopes to bring on board another three stations after the multplex has launched, though no details are available yet as to which stations might be carried.

With a proposed launch date of September 2004, the single transmitter at Madingley is expected to enable 82 percent of listeners with a DAB digital radio to tune in to the new services.

The commercial radio regulator is expected to make an announcement for the award of the licence in Autumn.

The city of Cambridge has only recently been added to the schedule of areas for which digital radio licences are to made available; it was previously thought there would be no spare capacity left for Cambridge.

To receive DAB digital radio stations in the UK, you need a DAB digital radio - a new type of radio that can receive digital radio broadcasts. For more information, read our guide to DAB digital radio and discover more about the tuners available to buy.
