emap boost Freeview digital radio stations

Hot on the heels of the success of Smash Hits radio, rock station Kerrang! and dance music brand Kiss in the latest audience listening figures, emap has earmarked three more music brands for the Freeview DTT service.

Rajar, the company that supplies the figures for both advertisers and the industry, last week issued its first ever set of figures for stations on the digital TV platform.

These showed listeners for Smash Hits riding at 759,000, Kerrang! at 771,000 and Kiss at 932,000.

The launches of the three new stations, in July, include two already available on the DAB digital radio platform.

The Hits, a contemporary music format, will join classic hits station Magic and a channel based around the indie and rock music magazine Q. The Hits and Magic can currently be heard on DAB radio in London. Magic is also carried on emap's own and several other local digital multiplexes in England.

If the stations are successful, it is likely they will appear on emap's digital multiplexes in the North of England.
