Competition expected to be fierce for West Midlands III

Birmingham, Wolverhampton and parts of Staffordshire, Warwickshire and Worcestershire will be tuning into a new format radio station on FM sometime next year.

"West Midlands Three" is expected to attract a large number of licence applications, but only one station will be successful in winning the frequency to broadcast.

Chrysalis-backed talk-and-news station LBC has already confirmed its intention to apply for the licence, with competition also likely from a number of rock and dance music stations.

Interested parties have until Tuesday, 13 May, 2003 to submit their application to the radio regulator.

The successful applicant will launch a station alongside 100.7 Heart FM and Saga 105.7fm, as well as many new stations on DAB digital radio.
