Liberty leaving London

Liberty Radio has failed to have its radio licence renewed in the capital. Instead, from 3rd July 2003, a new Asian station takes over the frequency.

Club Asia will broadcast Asian and urban music, aiming to appeal at a 15-34 age group. It will use 963 and 972AM - the frequencies currently being used to broadcast Liberty Radio.

Commenting on the award of this licence, Richard Hooper, Chair of the Authority, said:

"The Authority was faced with a difficult decision over this licence award. We realise that it will come as a particular disappointment to the current licensee, Liberty Radio. However, Members were impressed with Club Asia's proposals for a service appealing to an under-served young Asian community in Greater London and its extensive research which made a compelling case for such a service."
