MuxCo develops launch plans for DAB digital radio multiplexes

Local DAB digital radio multiplex operator MuxCo is on the lookout for stations to join its network of nine ensembles.

The company has published a questionnaire that can be downloaded by interested parties. The operator has set its sights on the rollout of its DAB local radio multiplexes by the end of 2010. Since the award of new local multiplex licences to both MuxCo and Now Digital, several stations such as Easy Radio have ceased, while others such as Chill have drastically scaled back their broadcast areas. These stations originally formed part of the applications by the two companies to run the multiplexes.

Following the Digital Britain report and plans announced by Ofcom to de-regulate commercial radio, the radio regulator has published a list of areas (see below) where programme sharing on local FM radio stations may take place. The knock-on effect is that local DAB digital radio multiplexes are free to request a merger with a neighbouring local multiplex, which should make broadcasting on DAB to a wider area more attractive. The difficulty is that not all digital radio multiplexes are operated or managed by the same company.

MuxCo may decide to combine its local digital radio multiplexes serving neighbouring areas. None of its multiplexes have yet launched.

Rival multiplex operator Now Digital, owned by Arquiva, has also yet to finalise plans for the launch of its multiplexes, but could ultimately combine a number of its adjacent licences to serve a wider area and drum up interest in broadcasting on DAB from smaller stations.

The enlarged broadcast areas that Ofcom have defined are as follows. Multiplexes that have yet to launch but may be affected by these plans are shown with a square next to them, with a link to the relevant news story, in the list:

The confirmed line-up of stations for each multiplex will not be known until time of launch of each one. The effect on both existing and new multiplexes is shown on our DAB multiplex updates page.
